I went to a lecture a the speaker talked about a variety of different topics. One item she talked about was the animals in this region. She talked about how some animals became vary rare to see. This is because of the land development in the past five years. You can see common animals outside like bunnies and butterflies. But some animals have become quite rare to see like some species of birds and insects.
She also talked about how the best place to find fossils were at the Connecticut River valley.
She also discussed how the figured out Pangaea. They ended up figuring out that at one point all the contents were once combined together. They figured this out because they found similar rock types at the shores of each continent, where the continent split.
Then she went into talking about the revolutionary war and how there were no beavers left after the war. They used to catch and kill the beavers so they could send their pelts down the river to the soldiers. That is why there were no beavers in Massachusetts after the war.
She then goes on and talks about a number of different things. Like the charcoal imports and when they made a lot of iron and how the wood ended up becoming the most important part of the iron production. She also talked about how the rail roads became a big thing. It was an easy way of getting goods somewhere quickly.
She also talked about the hunting they did. Back then the only animal that had a season was deer. But for all the other animals it was fair game. There were a lot of animals that became quite rare in Massachusetts because of this. For example you rarely see mountain lions or wolves here anymore. There is only a hand full of rattail snakes left here. The rattail snakes in Massachusetts started to adapt to a new survival. Here rattail snakes do not start to rattail until you are right on top of them. This is because they learned they will not get killed if they stay silent. So they adapted to they could survive.
This was a very interesting lecture to go to. I learned a lot about Massachusetts history and I am extremely glad I went.

A Response to Morgan218’s Blog about Underage Drinking

I just recently read a blog about underage drinking. In Morgan218’s blog “Underage Drinking Advertisements Going a Bit To Far” have to say that I agree. In her blog she mentions how there is a billboard up with a baby and a beer bottle and a picture of teenagers with empty alcohol cans all around them. This is wrong because a baby would never have a beer bottle and I can do much harm to a baby if they ingest alcohol. Although they billboard is trying to sent the message that underage drinking is wrong I feel they can do it in a better way. Putting a baby up on a billboard with a beer bottle is inappropriate. If they want to make people aware of underage drinking then they should just use the picture of the teenagers. Underage drinking can be very dangerous and I feel that teenagers should be made aware of this. Most car accidents are caused by underage kids drinking and driving. They need to be aware that if they drink may consequences can happen. But the main reason why teenagers drink is because they are exposed to it so often like Morgan218 said in her blog. We need to make teenagers more aware of the issues with underage drinking.

A Lecture on Brian Hawthorn

I went to Lecture at the Springfield Science Museum and listened to Brian Hawthorn speak. He spoke about the history of the world. It was really quite interesting because he used a measuring tape to show a time line of the events that were happening. We can only go back so far because we cannot see what happened before hand.
What we do know that the stars formed from the dust. Stars are composed of elements. So when a star or anything explodes that has heavy elements in it will form into another star. This is how the sun was formed. When stars explode or crash into each other they create heavy elements that then settle and form another star. This can happen over and over. The more times a star explodes or chares into another star the heaver the elements get. After they do this enough times the elements can become heavy enough to make the sun.
Around four and a half thousand million years ago the plant we call earth started to form as gas and liquid. As the planet started to develop water on it bacteria started to form. About 1.9 thousand million years ago we started to get more complicated organisms on this planet. Then about one thousand million years ago the Laurentia plate sucked under the Bronson plate forming one side of the Connecticut valley. Then about 240 million years ago Pangaea started to happen. As this started to happen around 200 million years ago the dinosaurs roamed the earth. Then about ten thousand years ago the forests we know today started to form and Indians started to come in. At this time there were also very large beavers. The Indians and the large beavers created a much diverted ecosystem.

A response to The King of Pawn’s Blog.

I have previously read The King of Pawn’s or Nikki’s Blog “Why is swimming not recognized as much as other sports?” I agree with the author 100 percent! I feel that people do not consider swimming a true sport, when in fact it is. Swimming is a very tough and tiring sport. It requires a lot of muscle and endurance. I agree with what Nikki said in her blog, “The only time television networks show anything about swimming is during the Olympics.” This is a true statement because the only time I ever see swimming on television is when the Olympics are on. This should not be the case; there are college swimming meets that can be broadcasted on television. Why is it that football and basketball get to be broadcasted on television all the time but swimming is not? We should change this.
Another reason why I think swimming is not thought if as a sport is because it is mainly a woman’s sport, not a lot of males swim. This is the case with a lot of woman’s sports. People think just because woman participate in the sport that it is not a real sport. It is becoming very sexist towards woman because society is not classifying the sports that women do as actual sports. Woman’s sports should be considered an actual sport because they are just as time consuming as any other sport.
I agree with Nikki’s blog 100 percent! I feel that swimming should be recognized as much as other sports are.

Cyber Space

I am sure that everyone has been on Facebook, instant messaging, text messaging or some form of communication through cyber space. What I am sure people are not aware of is the harassment that goes on with the use of these devices. Using cyber space as a form of communication opens up a whole new way of bullying threatening or harassing someone. People use cyber space as a way of harassing individuals. It is much easier to send a hurtful or threatening message through cyber space (when you cannot see that individuals reaction) rather then saying the exact same thing face to face with someone. It is much harder for a person to saying a hurtful or threatening statement to someone’s face because they can see how what they say affects the individual. I have seen this happen a numerous amount of times. There was an incident in my middle school a couple years ago. A student sent a message through cyber space threatening to kill another student. Well a parent found out about this and called the school to inform them about this potential problem. The next day at school there were polices all around the hallways and they were trying to get to the bottom of the matter. May other students were involved and came forward with information. The school caught the student who sent the message and the student was expelled from school.
Cyber space can be a very dangerous communication system where individuals do not think about what they send over it. What people do not understand is that when you harass someone, bully someone, or threaten an individual through cyber space it is a crime. So people need to think before they send a message through cyber space. They need to think about the consequences are for their reaction.

Are Athletes Good Role Models?

In our society can an athlete be a good role model for kids? I say “No they cannot.” Athletes in today’s society have a “do anything to play” attitude. This includes drugs, steroids, playing through the pain and injuries. When athletes do these things they are sending the wrong message to kids. They are saying that if you do these things you will be popular and strong and that people will look up to you. I mean why wouldn’t kids think these things? It sounds very convincing. When you hear about the things that athletes do and that people still support them and look up to them, it is just reiterating it to kids that doing these things is okay.
When athletes do drugs and steroids it is sending the impression to kids that it is okay to do drugs and steroids. Today in schools kids are starting to use drugs and steroids at much younger ages. A lot of kids using drugs are using steroids to “bulk up” as they say. They think it is okay because professional athletes are using them. But what kids don’t know is that drugs and steroids can do serious harm to you. They can harm your nervous system. They can also affect your mood and temper. When you use steroids temper is gravely affected. You become more aggressive more easily than you normally would.
When athletes play through the pain and injuries they look glamorous and strong. But they are actually being stupid because they are causing their injury to get worst and they are hurting their chances of being able to play again. But kids do not know this. All they know is that the athlete looks like a hero for playing through the pain. So kids begin to think that it is considered week to say that you are hurt. When actually it is the smartest thing you can do. If you love the sport and you want to be able to still play you should tell someone that you are hurt so you can get treatment. It is not considered week if you are hurt and you say something. It is smart!
So I ask you are these the kind of role models you want for kids today? Do we really want them to be subjected to these views? I say no! What do you think?
